Ringnes removes 602 tonnes of plastic from its product cycle in six years

Norwegian brewer Ringnes AS, part of Carlsberg Group, has removed 602 tonnes of plastic from its product cycle since 2019. The reduction adds to the annual saving of more than 5,000 tonnes achieved through the transition to 80% recycled content in all plastic bottles in 2023.

The reduction is a result of small, continuous improvements across the product cycle that together add up to the 602 tonnes. Every improvement has required extensive testing and adaptation to ensure product quality before being implemented.

Packaging Manager Sølvy Aslaksen says:

"A large part of the reduction comes from succeeding in reducing the weight on several of the bottle types. Among the biggest was the transition to a new design for the Imsdal brand water bottles. The weight reduction from 21.2 to 19.9 grams can save as much as 12 tonnes in cut plastic per year.”

Switching to a new supplier of preforms, the material Ringnes uses to produce plastic bottles, also resulted in several tonnes saved in 2025.

"One of the most exciting initiatives in 2025 was a close collaboration with our label supplier. By making small design adjustments, we reduced waste from label rolls. This alone saved us nearly five tonnes of plastic. The reduction per label was very small, but the total impact becomes significant at large production volumes," Sølvy adds.

With 602 tonnes removed, Ringnes is more than halfway towards its ambition of removing 1,000 tonnes of virgin plastic from the product cycle.

Beyond reducing virgin plastic, Ringnes continues to raise the share of recycled content across its packaging. All plastic bottles now contain 80% recycled material, and by the end of 2025, making Norway a frontrunner in helping us reach our global target.
